Another crucial aspect for the optimization of aluminum eletrolysis process is to efficiently feed the cell with solid alumina. Theoretically the amount of alumina injected should corresponds to the amount of alumina that is consumed by the chemical reaction. Moreover the alumina repartition should be optimized to better feed the areas where the reaction occurs and less the other.
A research project have therefore been launched to simulate the injection, dissolution and convection of alumina particles and concentration of solved alumina in an electrolysis cell. Our code take as initial velocity field the one computed by a full MHD coupling (see page MHD instabilities). Below is an example of the evolution of solved alumina concentration predicted by the solver in a real cell geometry.
